KOLRECYCLE

Traceability and certification of the recycling chain in circularity processes

The growing scarcity of natural resources presents significant challenges for companies that want to remain competitive and sustainable in the future. Fluctuations in the availability of raw materials have highlighted the need to rethink current economic models. This is where the circular economy emerges as a key alternative to tackle this issue.

Unlike the traditional “take, make, dispose” model, the circular economy focuses on reducing the extraction of new resources, promoting recycling, and maximizing the reuse of materials. This approach not only aims to minimize environmental impact but also to create a more efficient and resilient system in the face of resource shortages. As a result, both governments, through stricter regulations, and consumers, with increasing demands for sustainable products, are driving this shift.

In Europe, where more than half of the raw materials we consume are imported, this transition is crucial. The impact is not only economic — affecting our trade balance — but also environmental, increasing energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The circular economy offers a solution: reduce the demand for natural resources and prioritize recycling and reuse to alleviate pressure on the planet.

Adopting this model offers multiple benefits. By extending the life cycle of products and reducing waste, companies can lower costs, make more efficient use of materials, and reduce their reliance on external suppliers. Additionally, they contribute to environmental conservation and pollution reduction. This not only provides companies with a competitive advantage but also engages local communities in a transformative process that is essential for a more sustainable future.

The solution: What is KolRecycle?

Industrial recycling involves a variety of manual and automated processes, such as sorting, decomposition, sterilization, and material smelting. These processes often involve numerous participants across the supply chain, making it challenging to achieve efficient, transparent, and verifiable tracking from the origin to the final destination of the material.

To overcome this barrier, Kolokium has developed KOLRecycle, a platform that leverages Blockchain technology to manage the circular economy and transform raw materials from waste and scraps. This platform facilitates immutable traceability throughout the recycling chain and secure certification of the origin of materials, all the way to the final product, helping to prevent fraud in recycling processes.

KolRecycle

KOLRecycle is adaptable and configurable to manage various recycling processes, including those that are more complex, such as the recovery of noble minerals from technological waste. This solution integrates the benefits of industrial recycling with process digitization, aligning the circular economy with new technologies. The key benefits are:

Traceability, transparency, and auditing: All materials and recycling processes are recorded efficiently and transparently. Blockchain technology ensures that the information cannot be altered, guaranteeing that each step in the recycling chain is verifiable, from collection to the final product.

Digital integration of all supply chain participants: KOLRecycle enables all participants in the supply chain, from collectors to manufacturers, to interact through a common infrastructure. This facilitates smoother collaboration and reduces the potential for errors or fraud, improving the efficiency of recycled material management.

Operational efficiency and regulatory compliance: Process digitization, along with real-time updates on the status of materials, allows companies to meet environmental and operational regulations more efficiently. The guaranteed integrity of information simplifies coordination among various actors, reducing management and processing times.

Sustainability and reduced environmental impact: By optimizing the recycling and reuse of materials, KOLRecycle directly contributes to waste reduction and the decreased extraction of new natural resources. This not only lowers the environmental footprint of companies but also promotes a more responsible and sustainable use of the planet’s resources. In this way, companies that adopt KOLRecycle move toward greener production, aligned with global sustainability goals.

SUCCESS STORY:

At Kolokium, we have had the opportunity to collaborate in a consortium with several companies from Madrid, led by VALORIZA, as part of the VALREC Project. This initiative, driven by the Community of Madrid and supported by the European Community, focuses on circular economy management and the transformation of raw materials from waste, applying Blockchain technology from ‘Hyperledger Fabric.’
